North Carolina’s 1868
State Constitution still serves as the basis of North Carolina’s state government.
The constitution has been amended many times over the last 136 years, most notably
in 1970-71 when a revision of the constitution reduced the number of state agencies
from roughly 200 to 25. Below you will find a copy of the original, hand-written
1868 North Carolina Constitution, complete with the signatures of the men who drafted
the document.
