In 1941 the North Carolina General Assembly designated the dogwood as the state flower - the first state symbol. In 1943 the cardinal became the state bird. No symbols were added in the 1950's but the 60's brought us the state tree in 1963, the state shell in 1965 and the state mammal in 1969. In the 1970 the state fishinsectstonereptile and rock came in to existence. The 1980's brought us three new symbols, the state beverage, the state boat and the state dog. In 1995 the sweet potato was named the state vegetable.
